The US military has confirmed that one of its aircraft has crashed in eastern Afghanistan, but "does not indicate that the aircraft was caused by enemy fire". A Taliban spokesman claimed the group captured the plane near Ghazni.

A US Bombardier E-11A crashed early Monday afternoon and was initially mistaken for a passenger plane by Afghan authorities. But soon after, videos emerged from the wreckage site, showing US Air Force One's emblem as a burning sail.

"While the cause of the crash is under investigation, there is no indication that the crash was caused by enemy fire," tweeted a spokesman for the US military in Afghanistan. The Taliban claim that another plane has crashed. "
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement posted online: "A US fighter jet has been shot down. Many officers were killed.” He said senior Central Intelligence Agency officials were on the plane, but this claim could not be independently confirmed.

The E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node has been described as "Wi-Fi in the Sky" by the US Air Force, a communications satellite deployed to support missions in remote areas with no existing infrastructure.

He also quoted the Australian Transport Safety Bureau as saying there were no reports of the passenger plane missing.
Australian traffic safety officials said it may be a bug in Google's software. "There is a phenomenon called ghosting and this could be it," the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority told The Cairns Post.

2023 Air Force Chief of Staff Dave Goldfein told reporters Monday morning that he could confirm the plane that crashed was a Bombardier E-11A.

There are four Air Force E-11As in Afghanistan that carry the key to air communications on the battlefield. They are assigned to the 430th Expeditionary Electronic Warfare Group - a geographically separate unit of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing based at Bagram Airfield and operating exclusively at Kandahar Airfield.

BACN works to ensure consistent and effective communications in virtually any location or environment, significantly reducing the likelihood of communication failures and increasing mission success rates. The payload, or sensor package, carried by the E-11A allows it to communicate with troops on the ground and vice versa to accomplish the mission, Brett said.
A Defense Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, told Army Times that bad weather in the area was hampering the investigation. Air currently hosts ISR assets and search and rescue teams.
U.S. Army General Beth Riordan, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, told Military Times that "U.S. Central Command is aware of reports of U.S. aircraft downing in Afghanistan. We are currently monitoring the situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible."

AFKENT officials declined to comment to Military Times about the move to Resolute Support, the center that oversees US and NATO military efforts in Afghanistan. Officials at Resolute Support and the Pentagon did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
However, images on social media from the crash site showed the wreckage of the Bombardier E-11A aircraft.
